Introduction
Since its founding in 1994 Shanghai Sunqiao Modern Agriculture Development Zone has been approved by the state as one of the 21 national agricultural science and technology zones and base for demonstration and propagation of imported intelligent achievements, a leading enterprise of national key projects of industrialized agriculture, a standardized exemplary area of state-grade green house cultivation of green vegetables and a key project in Shanghai of modern agricultural park area. It has been authenticated by Iso14001 Environmental Ad-ministration System for 1 sq.km. and obtained both domestic and international certificates. With a prospective view to develop Chinese agriculture to attain foreign advanced standard and convert the traditional agriculture to modern agriculture so that we may march in the front of our trade.
The development zone is based on building factory farms with modern science and technology and developing agriculture with modern facilities. It is principally guided by hi-tech bioengineering and facilities in processing agricultural products and industrial products related to agriculture and with domestic and foreign trade as a link to chain of production and marketing, to combine agriculture, with science and tourism in industrialized agriculture, displaying the 5 functions of demonstration of production, propagation of modern agriculture, managing sightseeing tours, offering education in popularizing science and technology and gaining foreign exchange in international trade. In the end it will unify the social, ecological and economic benefits into one as objective.
Through continual exploration and perfection of the new management system the zone area has been rearranged and expanded. It has been expanded from its early 4 sq.km. to the present 12.03 sq.km. with an accumulated investment of 3 hundred million. The newly developed area is 4 sq.km. The principal key industries developed are: cultivation of seeds and seedlings for vegetables, edible mushrooms and flowers; meticulous processing of agricultural products; biotechnology with cellular, microbiological and DNA engineering; manufacture and installation of green houses; material circulation and transaction related to agriculture; accommodation for visitors spending their leisure time and sightseeing tours; and the tertiary business of convention and exhibition. At the present, the zone is an embryo of a metropolitan modern agriculture and a brilliant star of Pudong modern agriculture.
